Shellshocked - CVE-2014-6271 - Updated for CVE-2014-7169

Well this is twice in a year that I get to do an emergency patch to all my machines - Ugh! The bash vulnerability is a major one because it can affect any program that uses bash to set environment variables such as dhclient, cgi-scripts, etc. To test if you have the problem run:

env x='() { :;}; echo Vulnerable' bash -c "echo This is a test"

and if you get:

This is a test

Then it is time to patch. At least for me it was pretty easy to do: 

Ubuntu 10.04, 12.04: Run apt-get update; apt-get install bash

Setting up a Thinkpad with clickpad

Work upgraded me to a new Thinkpad T440p which has the new clickpad with a single physical button in the clickpad instead of the three separate buttons on the older T410 that I was using.  So how do I get the one clickpad button to act like a three button mouse.  After a bit of playing around I came up with the following solution:

New LOPSA Board of Directors Installed

The LOPSA Board of Directors held their annual Face to Face meeting a week ago in Princeton, New Jersey. All of the board members were in attendance and the two-day meeting focused on evaluating the organizational goals LOPSA has had and evaluating the future of the organization.

Well Google just screwed up their Apps for EDU domains - UPDATE 2

I work for a K-12 school district and we use Google Apps for EDU which is built on top of Google Apps for Business. We have tied this into our local authentication systems so when a staff or student changes their password locally it also changes their password on Google Apps. It worked pretty well until a few weeks ago our users started seeing messages like this when they tried to log in. This fails in so many different ways:
